Container gardens are a great way to add beauty and/or function to a particular area of your home, even if the space isn’t naturally hospitable to gardening. You can fill in concrete places with the container, or even do the same in your home. If you have a small patio or live in an apartment where you cannot permanently change the landscape, containers are the way to grow! The containers listed below are good for the environment, easy, or can even save you money.
Milk jugs and other recycled materials: Go back to grade school and make your own containers from milk jugs, soda bottles, tin cans, and anything else that you can reuse. It saves money and is good for the environment. Plus, you can paint and decorate them in any manner to suit your style.
Start small: This means with smaller plants and containers. You can save money this way and grow your garden bigger when you need or want to do so. Larger plants cost more, as do the containers. With a little patience, you can achieve a great garden for next to nothing.
Buy larger or sectioned pots: While this may seem counterproductive to the “start small” tip, it can actually go hand in hand with it. Buy smaller plants, but larger pots so that you don’t have to spend money on lots of pots. You can plant various types of plants in one pot, and you will also save money on soil by not filling up lots of smaller pots.
Shop second hand or yard sales: You wouldn’t believe the amount of people that will sell pots cheaply just to get rid of them. Hit up the yard sales to see what you can find for your container garden.
Get creative: Do you have an old dresser you are thinking of tossing out? You can turn the drawers into planters. You can also turn old teacups into herb planters, or use an old pair of boots to plant some cute flowers for your porch or patio. If you have some extra buckets, coffee tins, or laundry baskets just lying around, make them into something purposeful. Get creative and make your container garden fun!
Build and save: Find a couple of wooden pallets and build your own containers. This is free or close to it and you can make them just about any way you want, if you have the skill. Just basic building skills will get you a few nice and functional containers.
